Location
The Scout Moor Wind Farm is located on moorland east of the village of Edenfield and approximately 6km north west of Rochdale, in Lancashire.
Site Description
The site comprises 26 Nordex N80 turbines. These are rated at 2.5MW each giving the whole wind farm a rated capacity of 65MW. Each turbine is 60 metres to the hub with 40 metre blades resulting in a maximum tip height of 100 metres. The project also includes all the ancillary equipment and features such as access tracks, anemometer mast, underground cables, on-site substation and control building. A new dedicated substation has been built near Ashworth Moor reservoir to export the electricity to the National Grid.
A site layout can be seen by clicking here.
The site was constructed between 2006 – 2008 and began producing electricity during June 2008. UK developer Peel Energy developed the project from conception through to operation solely, until February 2010 when HgCapital’s Renewable Power Partners Fund acquired a 50% stake for inclusion in the RidgeWind operating portfolio.
With construction complete, the land surrounding the turbines has returned to its pre-wind farm moorland use and will remain in this state for the lifetime of the wind farm, expected to be 25 years. The site will not be permanently staffed but is monitored remotely and visited regularly by technicians for scheduled maintenance and repairs. After 25 years the turbines and associated infrastructure are removed and the land restored in line with an agreed plan.
Benefits
The Scout Moor wind farm at 65MW has the ability to meet the energy demands of around 45,000 homes. This green electricity generated displaces other generated electricity including fossil fuels and will therefore prevent the release of at least 103,000 tonnes of CO2 every year as well as thousands of tonnes of other harmful greenhouses gases such as nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide (NOx and SO2). (CF of 33%)
During the 25-year lifetime of the wind farm, a significant amount of money, approximately £400,000, will be available for local landowners for habitat enhancement schemes to provide important moorland fringe habitats suitable for varying flora and fauna.
