Location

The Tir Mostyn and Foel Goch Wind Farm is located on land in the Denbighshire Moors, approximately 8km south west of the town of Denbigh, North Wales.

Site Description

The site comprises 25 Gamesa G52 turbines. These are rated at 850kW each giving the whole wind farm a rated capacity of 21.25MW. Each turbine is 49 metres to the hub with a rotor diameter of 52m resulting in a maximum tip height of 75 metres. The project also includes all the ancillary equipment and features such as access tracks, anemometer mast, underground cables, on-site substation and control building.

The site was constructed in 2005 and began producing electricity during October of that year. UK developer Wind Prospect constructed and operate the project funded by HgCapital’s Renewable Power Partners Fund; the first project built by the fund.

With construction complete, the land surrounding the turbines has returned to its pre-wind farm use and will remain in this state for the lifetime of the wind farm, expected to be 25 years. The site will not be permanently staffed but is monitored remotely and visited regularly by technicians for scheduled maintenance and repairs. After 25 years the turbines and associated infrastructure are removed and the land restored in line with an agreed plan.

Benefits

The Tir Mostyn wind farm at 21.25MW has the ability to meet the energy demands of at least 15,600homes. The wind farm is expected to generate over 65.5 GWh of green electricity every year, which is 65.5 million units of electricity (kWh). This green electricity generated displaces other generated electricity including fossil fuels and will therefore prevent the release of at least 35,700 tonnes of CO2 every year as well as thousands of tonnes of other harmful greenhouses gases such as nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide (NOx and SO2).  (CF 35%). Tir Mostyn has been operating for significant period and has a very good wind speed meaning these figures are a conservative indication of the wind farm’s benefits.
